In times of crisis, the crazy seems to come out of the woodwork. That’s exactly what is happening with COVID-19. The nuttiest? A viral document describing how people can avoid the virus by not consuming ice cream.
We couldn’t make this up.
Fortunately, UNICEF, the humanitarian organization falsely represented in the fake messaging is fighting back. The organization immediately demanded the creators take down the message. Then UNICEF deputy executive director for partnerships Charlotte Petri Gornitzka issued a statement setting the record straight and chastising the spread of misinformation in times of crisis.
"Misinformation during times of a health crisis can spread paranoia, fear and stigmatization," she said. "It can also result in people being left unprotected or more vulnerable to the virus."
Gornitzka also advised the public to seek accurate information on how to stay safe from verified sources, such as UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
The No. 1 tip: wash your hands with soap and water before you eat your ice cream.
