Milk production in the United States surged 1.5% in July over a year ago while cows were up 37,000 head from last year, reports the United States Department of Agriculture. July cow numbers were also up 2,000 head from June.
The July increase in cow numbers over month-earlier levels reverses a 4-month decline. Cow numbers had peaked at 9.385 million head in March, and were dropping 10,000 to 15,000 cows each month until July, when they again ticked upward. Stronger milk prices in June likely halted the decline—at least for a time.
In terms of milk production, California was up just 0.5% in July while Wisconsin increased output 0.6%. New York was up 1.8% while Idaho climbed 2.3% and Texas surged 4.4%. Note: California cow numbers fell 4,000 head from a year ago, Wisconsin was down 11,000, and New York, down 1,000. Idaho added 14,000 cows, however, and Texas was up 25,000 head.
The largest jump in milk production on a percentage basis was South Dakota, up 11.5, followed by Indiana, up 6%, and Colorado, up 5.8%. The largest decline in milk production came in Florida, down 5.7%, and New Mexico and Vermont, both down 5.3%.
