July exports of U.S. dairy products continued to show amazing strength, up 22% in volume and up 17% in value, reports the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC).
For the first 7 months of the year, exports are up 16% on a milk solids basis while dollar value is up 14%.
Southeast Asia has been the biggest growth area along with increased whey sales to China. The one weak spot has been Mexico, where overall export volume has dropped some 18% since April.
Total nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP) exports were up 52% in July, led by sales to Southeast Asia. NDM/SMP sales were also up considerably to both Egypt and China, but volume sales to Mexico were off 6%. Whey shipments to China in July were more than double as the country recovers from African Swine Fever.
Cheese exports slowed due to rising U.S. prices, though total shipments were still up 5%. Cheese sales to South Korea more than doubled, but declined in Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Central America and Mexico.
On a total milk solids basis, July dairy exports were equal to 16.9% of U.S. milk production. For the first seven months of the year, exports equaled 16% of production, up from 14.1% over the same period in 2019.
