Trump’s executive order on immigration won’t stop H-2A workers

April 23, 2020

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 22 which puts a 60-day pause on immigration into the U.S.

However, the executive order won’t stop the movement of guest agricultural workers to the U.S. Instead, it only addresses people seeking green cards.

The Packer’s Tom Karst visited April 22 with Michael Marsh, CEO and president of the National Council of Agricultural Employers about the executive order and current state of H-2A worker arrivals for growers.

“We’re still short of workers,  and still working hard to try to get to additional workers, but it has not been quite the calamity we might have thought it would be about a month and a half ago,” Marsh said.

Marsh also reviewed how agricultural employers are working to prevent the coronavirus COVID-19 from spreading, and talked about the fight to have the administration’s paycheck protection program apply to farmers.
