The EDGE Dairy Farmer Cooperative Commends a Groundbreaking U.S.-E.U. Trade Framework That Will Address Geopolitical Indications and Geographic Names of Products.
The EDGE Dairy Farmer Cooperative, one of the largest dairy farmer organizations in the U.S., is commending a new trade framework agreement between the United States and the European Union. The group has praised the deal for addressing two of the most significant trade irritants that have plagued the dairy industry for years: the use of geographic indications (GIs) and geopolitical matters. This agreement is seen as a major step toward creating a fairer and more stable global market.
The central issue for the U.S. dairy industry has long been the E.U.’s practice of protecting names like “parmesan” or “feta” as geographic indications, effectively limiting American dairy producers from using those names. While the agreement does not fully resolve this issue, EDGE’s leadership believes it provides a new foundation for future negotiations, signaling a willingness by both sides to find common ground.
