Cattle, beef prices slide as supply builds

Fed cattle on the negotiated market traded $240 per hundredweight across the Plains. This was $2-3 per hundredweight lower than the week prior for both the North and South.
USDA reported the weekly average choice boxed beef cutout at $404.77 per hundredweight, down $8.33. The select cutout was $382.87 per hundredweight, down $3.84.
Analysts estimated weekly slaughter at 561,000 head, up 74,000 head from last week’s holiday-shortened activity and down 63,000 from a year ago.
