Fastest herd expansion since the 1980s is driving milk supply well beyond demand.
U.S. dairy herd expansion has accelerated at a pace not seen in four decades, with September milk production rising 4% year over year, well above expectations. Even more striking, higher milkfat and protein levels pushed component-adjusted production up 6.1%. Herd numbers jumped sharply, with a 21,000-cow upward revision to August and a combined increase of more than 80,000 cows between August and September alone.
In just 15 months, U.S. dairy farmers have added 258,000 cows, a 2.8% increase and the fastest expansion since the mid-1980s. Nearly three-quarters of that growth occurred in the past seven months. This surge mirrors the rebound seen after federal milk production controls ended in the 1980s, underscoring how unusual the current expansion is in modern dairy history.
