Competition among packers for fed cattle on the cash negotiated market was intense last week, with trading ranging from $224 to $235 per hundredweight in the South, $2 to $12 higher than the previous week. In the North, trade occurred from $240 to $244 per hundredweight, $4 to $8 higher. Dressed trade occurred at $380 per hundredweight, $5 to $12 higher.
The average weekly steer price for Kansas has rallied $35 per hundredweight since the week ending March 7. In Nebraska, the average weekly steer price is up $42 per hundredweight since the week ending February 28. For comparison, in 2014, it took from the first week of January to the last week of November for the 5-Area weekly average steer price to rally $34 per hundredweight. Even accounting for inflation, these are staggering figures.
Last week’s slaughter estimate reached 582,000 head, 28,000 below a year ago.
