August can be one of the toughest months of the year to get dairy cows pregnant. By late summer, heat stress has often been building for weeks. Cows eat less, lie down more, show weaker heats, and carry a higher internal heat load. The result is familiar to many herds: fewer visible heats, lower conception rates, more repeat breeders, and more early pregnancy losses.
The problem is not just that cows are uncomfortable. Heat stress reaches deep into the reproductive system. It can reduce estrus expression, compromise egg quality, disrupt hormone patterns, and damage early embryonic development. Research and field experience both show that summer heat can sharply reduce pregnancy success compared with cooler months.
Heat Stress Hits Reproduction From Several Directions
The most visible sign is weaker heat activity. During hot weather, cows are less likely to mount, stand, or move around long enough for a heat detection program to catch them. Many standing events also occur during cooler nighttime hours, when labor may not be watching closely. That makes tail chalk, activity monitors, and timed A.I. programs more valuable during late summer.
Less obvious—but just as important—is what happens inside the cow. Heat stress can reduce dry matter intake and push cows into negative energy balance. That shortage of energy affects the hormones needed for strong follicle growth and healthy egg development. At the same time, elevated body temperature can reduce oocyte quality and make the first week of embryo development especially vulnerable.
For the producer, the takeaway is simple: the August slump is not caused by one failure point. It is a stack of problems—cow comfort, intake, heat detection, hormone timing, egg quality, and embryo survival—all hitting at the same time.
Cooling Is a Reproductive Strategy, Not Just a Comfort Strategy
The first defense is aggressive cooling. Fans, soakers, shade, holding-pen cooling, fresh water access, and good air exchange all help reduce body temperature and protect fertility. Pay special attention to places where cows stand close together: the holding area, return alleys, feedline, and stalls. A cow that is already hot before breeding has a lower chance of maintaining a pregnancy.
Cooling should also be evaluated by what the cows are doing. Are cows crowding, bunching, panting, standing instead of lying, or avoiding parts of the barn? Those behaviors are signs that the system is not keeping up. Small improvements in air speed, water coverage, and cow flow can make a meaningful difference when every degree matters.
Adjust the Breeding Program for Summer Conditions
Because heat detection is less reliable during hot weather, many herds benefit from a stronger timed A.I. strategy. Protocols such as Ovsynch, Double Ovsynch, or G7G can improve submission rates and reduce missed heats. The goal is not just milk production. Healthy follicle development, strong ovulation, and early embryo survival all depend on a cow having enough available energy and nutrients at the right time.
Do Not Ignore Mycotoxins During the August Slump
Heat stress and mycotoxins can compound each other. Summer conditions increase the risk of feed heating, spoilage, and mold growth at the bunker face, in commodities, and in the TMR. At the same time, heat-stressed cows are more vulnerable because they are already eating less, fighting inflammation, and diverting nutrients away from reproduction.
Several toxins are especially concerning for dairy reproduction. Zearalenone can act like estrogen and disrupt normal cycling. DON and fumonisins can reduce intake, irritate the gut, and contribute to inflammation. Aflatoxins create added concern because of liver stress, immune suppression, and milk residue risk. Even when individual toxin levels look moderate, combinations of toxins can create a bigger drag on health and fertility.
Producers should watch for warning signs such as inconsistent intakes, loose manure, more sorting, unexplained milk or component drops, higher somatic cell counts, more health events, repeat breeders, and poorer conception than expected. None of these signs prove mycotoxins by themselves, but they should trigger a closer look at feed quality and testing.
Practical Steps for Producers
· Audit cooling before breeding results fall. Check fans, soakers, holding-pen cooling, water access, and cow behavior before the hottest weeks arrive.
· Strengthen heat detection. Use activity systems, tail paint, chalk, or pressure patches, and remember that many standing events occur during cooler evening and overnight hours.
· Use timed A.I. strategically. Synchronization programs can help reduce missed breedings when cows are not showing strong heats.
· Protect intake. Keep feed fresh, push up often, manage refusals, and work with your nutritionist to support energy density without increasing digestive upset.
· Manage the feed face aggressively. Remove spoiled feed, maintain a clean bunker face, feed out fast enough, and prevent TMR heating.
· Test when performance does not match expectations. Mycotoxin testing is most useful when sampling is done carefully across feeds and interpreted with your nutritionist and veterinarian.

August reproductive performance is won or lost before the pregnancy check. The best herds do not treat summer infertility as a mystery or accept it as unavoidable.
