The rapid rise in beef cattle prices has driven inflation and fundamental change in the dairy sector.
Similar to the price for beef calves and cows, cull dairy cows, young cross-bred calves destined for the beef market and fresh milking cows have more than doubled in value.
Why it matters: A quickly evolving sector needs new ideas, infrastructure and research.
A 469,400 head shift
When comparing the first nine months of this year to one year earlier, dairy cow culling has been down every week. If those 39 weeks are totaled, U.S. dairy farmers sent 329,000 fewer dairy cows to slaughter from a national dairy herd that presently totals 9.3 million head. Those 329,000 fewer head sent to slaughter represent 3.5% of the nation’s milk cow herd.
