New World screwworm crosses border

The June 3 confirmation that the parasitic New World screwworm (NWS) has crossed the border into the U.S. has triggered officials to implement the strategies outlined in the federal NWS Response Playbook. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed detection of an NWS case in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, noting that the larvae, which consume live flesh, were found in its umbilical cord wound. An Associated Press story cited USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, who further pinpointed the location to LaPryor, Texas. State Veterinarian Bud Dinges has ordered a 12-mile quarantine zone that locks down movement of warm-blooded animals, including pets.
