As reports roll in about confirmed cases of New World screwworm (NWS), states beyond the already-affected Texas and New Mexico have announced measures to help prevent spread. From import restrictions to emergency rules, officials are locking in protocols and looking out for their state’s livestock and wildlife. State announcements include:
Michigan: The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced new domestic animal movement requirements. Effective June 17, certain warm-blooded animals entering the state were subject to the new rules, which are dependent on the state/region of origin.
New York: New import requirements are in place from the State Department of Agriculture and Markets, including restriction of livestock movement and pets from areas with either confirmed or suspected areas. The order also standardizes veterinary testing, certification of good health, and preventive treatment for animals that come from impacted areas.
