Take Away Message from U.S. Milk Production Report: Road to Less Milk

The April 2024 USDA Milk Production report illustrated a 0.9% decline in year-over-year milk production with a total of 18.8 billion lbs. of milk. Although February revised production, at 17.4 billion lbs., was up 2.9% from February 2023. However, once you adjust February production for the additional day due to the leap year causes February revised production to be down 0.7% on a per day basis.

When looking at per cow milk production, the 24 major states average 2,115 lbs. for March, which is 3 fewer lbs. than last March.

The number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.88 million head, 71,000 head fewer than in March 2023, and 7,000 head less than in February 2024.
