Thinking Out of the Box

How many of us truly consider ourselves "out-of-the-box" thinkers? Let’s explore that idea through a baseball analogy. Imagine stepping up to the plate as the number four hitter—the power slot—with the two fastest runners already on base. In that moment, do you automatically think about hitting a home run because you can, or do you focus on placing a strategic hit down the line to score two runs?


In our personal lives, do we ever consider exploring new places, trying different foods, or seeking out new perspectives? Or do we move through life with blinders on, sticking to what’s familiar? When it comes to business, do we take the time to listen to a salesperson with a fresh idea—someone who may not represent a big-name company? Or do we get stuck in the mentality of “I’ve always done it this way,” and miss out on technologies that could improve efficiency, increase profits, reduce labor costs, or generate savings?


Take my own experience, for example. We recently made the decision to expand our business and take it to the next level by relocating to a new state. After researching three different areas across the U.S.—and with a little divine intervention—we chose the location that felt right. Moving both our business and our family in such a short time frame was a challenge, but through careful planning and due diligence, we made it happen.


Now, five months later, countless doors and windows have opened—not just for our business, but more importantly, for our family. We chose to think outside the box—or, as my Pap used to say, “Look at the big picture.” Our business has been built on that mindset. Going through life with blinders on only lets you see one direction—straight ahead—never allowing you to notice what lies to either side. And on those sides? Potentially endless opportunities.


So here’s my challenge to you: Embrace the balance that comes with thinking outside the box—seeing the big picture. The next time you're faced with something new, whether it's trying a new product, exploring a new place, or hearing a different point of view, give it a fair chance. The decision that shaped our move came down to finding that balance between opportunity and lifestyle.


The unfamiliar can be uncomfortable—but when approached thoughtfully, change can also be exhilarating. Maybe it’s time to combine the old with the new.
