Fed cattle prices surge as beef production rises; Futures market faces pressure

Fed cattle on the cash negotiated market traded at $210 per hundredweight in the South last week, $7 higher than the week prior. In the North, cattle traded at $212 to $215 per hundredweight, $7 to $9 higher. Dressed trade occurred at $331 and $335 per hundredweight in the North, $10 higher.
The latest CME Feeder Index for the 7-day rolling average ending March 19 was $285.94 per hundredweight, up $4.69 on the week.
In the Friday morning report, choice boxed beef cutout finished the week at $325.45 per hundredweight, $7.18 higher than a week ago. Select cutout was $3.30 higher at $309.62.
Official slaughter data for the week ending March 8 showed dressed steer weights at 945 pounds, up 3 pounds from the week prior and 23 pounds heavier than a year ago. Dressed heifer weights came in at 867 pounds, steady with the week prior and 24 pounds heavier from a year ago.
