When looking at national Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) production data, January 2026 milk contained 4.46% butterfat. That figure is just shy of the December 2025 all-time record of 4.47%, according to data from USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service.
At first glance, it appears that the nation’s dairy farmers are collectively churning out more butterfat. However, in evaluating these milk component trends, it’s important to also conduct monthly comparisons as components fluctuate throughout the year due to heat stress, shifts in feed rations, and a host of other factors.
