One by one poor-performing and problematic cows are exiting dairy herds throughout the U.S. Lackluster milk price makes it easier for producers to cull cows, as they look to secure an alternative profit source by capitalizing on strong beef prices. However, one might wonder if we are making a dent in turning the current dairy economy around by culling.
Sharina Sharp, an analyst with the Daily Dairy report shares that the markets are trying to remind producers to reign in product.
“The markets are all but shouting at dairy producers to rein in milk production, and high beef prices are amplifying the message,” she says.
