The USDA is projecting a larger hay crop in 2025.

Production for all non-alfalfa types of hay is estimated at 73.752 million tons, 1.13 million above the 2024 total, with an increase in the harvested area guess, up 755,000 acres to 35.533 million, canceling out a slight dip in average yield from 2.09 tons per acre last year to 2.08 tons this year.

The USDA sees alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures at 49.748 million tons, 92,000 lower, with a record average yield guess of 3.51 tons per acre, 0.1 higher, against a 420,000 acre decline in harvested area to 14.192 million acres.
