In vitro success one metric at a time

The International Embryo Technology Society reported that the number of in vitro-produced cattle embryos has more than doubled in North America since 2020. More than one million in vitro embryos are produced in the U.S. annually. This rapid growth reflects the accelerating push for genetic progress across the global dairy herd. But volume alone does not guarantee success — and Sofia Ortega and her team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison dove into whether the genetics of the donor animal influences how well those embryos develop and establish pregnancy.
The in vitro process has historically been held back by the production of the gold standard Grade 1 embryos. “How we can improve the number of Grade 1 embryos and the success rate after transfer has been a burning question for me,” said Ortega in a “Dairy Science Digest” podcast.
