When it comes to milk production in the U.S., what a difference a few decades can make.
The numbers speak for themselves: According to a new report from USDA, U.S. milk production increased by 32% from 2004-24, jumping from 170.8 billion pounds to 225.9 billion pounds in that period.
While output increased by 28% from 18,960 pounds per cow in 2004 to 24,178 pounds in 2024, ERS noted that most of the increased milk production per farm was attributed to increasing farm size, as measured by dairy cows per farm.
